SSA to SRT
Convert old SubStation Alpha (.ssa) files to SRT
SSA is the older sibling of ASS and still turns up in archives. Captionry reads its [V4 Styles] and [Events] sections and writes plain SRT that any player accepts.

What changes in the conversion
- The Events Format line decides which field is the start, end and text, so SSA's Marked field and custom orders are read correctly.
- A style with Italic or Bold set (-1 in SSA) makes that style's lines italic or bold in the SRT.
- Inline {\i1} and {\b1} codes are kept as <i> and <b>; positions, colours and fonts are removed.
- Files from older Windows tools are often not UTF-8. Encoding is detected, and you can choose it under Options.
FAQ
Questions
What is the difference between SSA and ASS?
ASS (v4.00+) extends SSA (v4) with more style fields and layers. Captionry reads both and treats them the same way for conversion.
My SSA file shows wrong accents. What do I do?
Pick the file's encoding under Options, for example Windows-1252 for Western European or Windows-1251 for Cyrillic. The SRT is always written as UTF-8.
