How to convert ASS to VTT

  1. Drop your .ass files

    Drop files or a whole folder onto the converter. Each file is checked and listed with its encoding and cue count.

  2. Keep WebVTT selected

    WebVTT is preselected on this page. Set a time offset or strip tags under Options if you need to.

  3. Download

    One file downloads as .vtt; several come as one zip with your folder structure kept.

Details

What changes in the conversion

  • \N line breaks become real line breaks; {\i1}, {\b1} and {\u1} become <i>, <b> and <u>, and so do italic and bold set by a style.
  • Positions, colours, fades, karaoke and vector drawings are removed.
  • The same line repeated on several layers (a common trick for outlines) is written once.
  • Characters WebVTT reserves (&, <, >) are escaped, and cues are sorted by start time.

FAQ

Questions

Signs and dialogue overlap in my file. Are both kept?

Yes. Overlapping lines are kept as separate cues, so a sign and a line of dialogue at the same moment both appear.

Does the VTT keep the top-of-screen position of signs?

No. Position codes such as {\an8} are removed, so every cue uses the player's default position.
