How to convert SRT to ASS

  1. Drop your .srt files

Details

What changes in the conversion

  • The file gets a [Script Info] block (1920x1080), one Default style (Arial 64, white with a dark outline) and an [Events] section.
  • <i>, <b> and <u> become {\i1}, {\b1} and {\u1}; line breaks become \N.
  • Curly braces in the text are written as round brackets, so they are not read as override codes.
  • ASS stores time in hundredths of a second, so millisecond timings are rounded to the nearest 10 ms.

Questions

Can I choose the font or position?

Not in Captionry: every line uses the Default style. Open the file in an ASS editor such as Aegisub to restyle it; changing the Default style changes every line at once.

Will SSA players read the file?

The output is ASS (v4.00+). Most players and editors that read SSA also read ASS.
