Details

What changes in the conversion

  • A WEBVTT header is added and cue numbers are dropped; WebVTT does not need them.
  • Timestamps change from 00:01:02,500 to 00:01:02.500.
  • <i>, <b> and <u> are kept; <font> tags and {\an8}-style position codes are removed.
  • Characters WebVTT reserves (&, <, >) are escaped, so players show them as text.

FAQ

Questions

Can I shift the timing at the same time?

Yes. Enter an offset in milliseconds in the options; negative values move subtitles earlier. Cues that would end before 0:00 are left out and listed as a warning.

My SRT files show odd characters. What do I do?

Older SRT files are often Windows-1252 or another legacy encoding. Captionry detects UTF-8, UTF-16 and Windows-1252; for Central European or Cyrillic files choose Windows-1250 or 1251 under Options. The VTT is always written as UTF-8.
